I am very excited to have the opportunity to share my Roman Catholic faith with you.  My faith in the Church defines every fiber of my being.  If you are reading this and are not Catholic, please do not stop.  Catholicism defines me, but our Savior, Jesus Christ and His love for all of us, is what defines Christianity.  My prayer is that I may be able to share the gifts that the Holy Spirit has bestowed upon me and that you may share in these fruits as well.

May God bless you today and every day.

As a result of feeling the call to fully honor our Blessed Mother, on December 13, 2003, I began a new discussion board.  This board is for every devoted Catholic woman.  She may be married or single; she may already have a family or just starting one; she may be trying to conceive or using natural family planning to avoid for now; she may be pregnant or facing the cross of infertility.  We may look very different, or we may look oddly familiar.  However, no matter what our lives look like, the one thread that binds us together is our devotion to the Roman Catholic Church...it's faith and doctrines.  Please stop by.  We would love for you to be a part of our family at "Handmaidens of the Lord".  You may access our home by clicking the following blinkie...

What exactly does a Roman Catholic believe?

Our faith is stated in the Apostles' Creed...

"I believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, Maker of Heaven and Earth, of all that is seen and unseen.

I believe in Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, True God from True God, begotten not made, One in being with the Father.  Through Him all things were made.  For us men and for our salvation He came down from Heaven:

By the power of the Holy Spirit He was born of the Virgin Mary, and became man.

For our sake He was crucified under Pontius Pilate; He suffered, died, and was buried.  On the Third day He rose again in fulfillment of the scriptures; He ascended into Heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.  He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and His kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of Life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son.  With the Father and the Son He is worshipped and glorified.  He has spoken throught the prophets.

I believe in one holy, catholic, and apostolic church.  I acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.  I look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.

Amen."

In addition, to the Apostles' Creed is the Nicene Creed.  The Nicene Creed was a response to the Arian heresy, which denied the divinity of Christ.  It takes its name from Nicaea, city of an ecumenical council in A.D. 325.  Subsequent to the meeting in Nicaea, the original creed underwent some changes--at meetings in Constantinople in 381 and Chalcedon in 450.  The Nicene Creed is the only Christine creed accepted in common as authoritative by the Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican, and major Protestant Churches.

"We believe in one God,
     the Father, the Almighty,
     maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
     the only Son of God,
     eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
     true God from true God,
begotten, not made, one in Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.

to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come.  Amen."

Prayer is the best form of communicating with our Father and His Son.   Jesus, Himself, told us, " I am going to the Father.  Whatever you ask in My Name I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.   If you ask Me for anything in My Name, I will do it" (Jn 14:12-13).  Additionally, He commanded us again, "Ask, and it will be given you; seek and you will find; knock, and the door will be opened to you.  For everyone who asks will receive, and those who seek will find, and to those who knock the door will be opened" (Lk 11:9-10).

There are so many beautiful forms of prayer.  You can pray by singing to Our King.  You can pray by offering up your sufferings.  You can pray by living your life dedicated to Our Lord and Savior.  Mother Teresa of Calcutta said this of prayer, "What is the connection between prayer and obedience?  Prayer will give us a clean heart, a clean heart will help us to see God, and if we see God, we will obey.  The more we pray, the better we will pray and that will produce the fruit of a clean heart.  Singing hymns with brief verses and talking to God is prayer."

One of my favorite privileges of the Roman Catholic faith is the variety of ways of which we have been shown to pray.  And not only the different ways of prayer, but to those to whom we send our intentions.  As Catholics, we do not worship Mary, nor do we worship the saints; we have only 1 true God...God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.  We do not pray to Mary and the saints instead of praying to Jesus.  We pray to them because we believe they are with Jesus in Glory and who better to speak to Jesus on our behalf than those closest to Him.  It is just like how a daughter or son sometimes  speaks first to their mother knowing that she will speak on their behalf to their father.  So do we, as Catholics, have the honor of speaking to Jesus thru those that are closest to Him.

Besides the Rosary which is a glorious and beautiful prayer, we have the option of praying so many beautiful Novenas.  Please press the following link to learn more about Novenas and to view some powerful prayers.

I have read many books, but the one book that has changed my life most significantly has been "Life-Giving Love" by Kimberly Hahn.  In her book she discusses God's design for marriage, and within this design, God's calling to open our lives and bodies to the gift of children.  Not only does she discuss Natural Family Planning vs Contraception, she discusses all of the reasons why society feels it is necessary to put limits on our family size.  Kimberly Hahn also talks at length about the pain of infertility, miscarriage, and stillbirth.  She discusses how this horrible pain and loss is a part of God's plan and how to turn back to the Lord in such a time of suffering.

Topics Covered:

  • The Beauty of God's Design regarding procreation and union
  • The value of the child in our society and in Scripture
  • The Bible and contraception
  • What Natural Law reveals about contraception
  • The abortion-contraception connection
  • Infertility and sterilization
  • How to heal after a miscarriage or stillbirth
  • Natural Family Planning and stewardship of our fertility
  • Our bodies as living sacrifices
  • Practical advice on how to Minister to Moms
  • And more!

Her book can be bought at Saint Joseph Communications.  Her book is available in softcover and on tape (for the husband that doesn't read or the mom that spends too much time in the car!).  http://www.saintjoe.com/products/3065.html
